Driver number FAQs

What is the change in road traffic law?

The new law requires us to collect driver numbers for each driver named on a motor insurance policy, on both new and existing policies.

Does this only affect Zurich customers?

No, changes to the Road Traffic law means it will be a legal requirement from 31st March 2025 for all insurers in Ireland to collect driver numbers for each driver named on a motor policy.

Why do we need this information?

The new law requires us to collect driver numbers for each driver named on a motor insurance policy, on both new and existing policies. The new law also requires us to provide this information to the Motor Insurers’ Bureau of Ireland along with other information about you and your policy which we are legally required to provide them with.

What is the driver number and where I can find it?

Irish Driver licence How do I provide my driver number?

The quickest way to provide your driver number is to go to our online form: https://www.zurich.ie/drivernumber and follow the steps to add the driver number details. It’s easy to use, just make sure you have your policy number and PIN which you can find on the driver number letter we sent you, as well as your driver number for you and any named driver on your policy. It is important that you provide all the information we ask for. For example, if you provide your driver number but not those of your named driver(s), we will only be able to renew the policy for you and will be required to remove the named driver(s) from your policy.

What happens if I don’t provide my driver number?

The new law requires us to collect the driver numbers for anyone named on your policy. Without it, you will be unable to renew your policy with us.

How do I provide my driver number if I cannot use the online form?

If you are unable to do this online, you can call us on 053 915 7602 between 08:30 and 17:30 Monday to Friday or you can email drivernumber.ireland@zurich.com with your policy number and copy of your licence.

What if I have a non-Irish drivers licence?

If you have a non-Irish drivers licence we need your driver number and a copy of your drivers licence (front and back). If you have an EU drivers licence your driver number will be located in field 4d or 5 of your licence.

What do I do if my licence is lost, stolen, or damaged?

By law, you must hold a valid driving licence or learner permit in order to drive and you must carry it with you when you are driving. The National Driver Licence Service (NDLS) manages licence applications and renewals. You can apply for your replacement driving licence online. Visit the NDLS website to find out how. Don’t leave it to the last minute as the process can take some time. Your insurer or broker will usually let you know your renewal is due approximately 30 days before renewal date.

In the short-term, you can call the NDLS to request your driver number on 0818 700 800. You will need to confirm your identity by providing your name, date of birth and PPSN. However, you must replace your licence and carry it with you when you drive. It is important to act now, so you are not left without insurance cover when the new law comes into effect.
